Legendary! It’s a status very few groups ever attain. But for 30 years and counting, En Vogue has achieved this pinnacle on nothing but pure talent. And they are not letting up now. Still riding high off the global release of 2018’s Electric Café, their first album in 14 years, En Vogue is literally soaring as Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron-Braggs and Rhona Bennett take the group to even greater heights.

Formed in 1989 in the Bay Area, En Vogue, comprised then of Ellis, Herron, Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones, began their official takeover in 1990 with their hit single, “Hold On” from their critically-acclaimed debut album, Born To Sing, which reached number one on both the dance and R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Since then, they have sold over 20 million physical albums. More impressively, they have transitioned effortlessly into the digital age, garnering over 30 million streams and 26 million plus YouTube views for their Top 6 hit singles alone, which, in addition to “Hold On,” includes “Free Your Mind,” “Never Gonna Get It,” “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” “Don’t Let Go” and “Whatta Man” (feat. Salt N Pepa).

Today the evolution of En Vogue, now a trio with Bennett, whose pre-group highlights include her childhood stint alongside future musical powerhouses Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears on the Disney Channel’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, is still thriving. Ellis credits the transition to “respecting the fact that we’re all individuals and respecting everyone’s decision to do and be and have what they want and what they choose.”

As for the group’s longevity, Ellis points to “gratitude” as the key. “It’s just appreciating the opportunity,” she says. “It’s really been a blessing and I think it would be a shame to take it for granted and walk away from it.”

Doubling down on their En Vogue legacy has yielded tremendous fruit. “Rocket,” their Ne-Yo-penned, Curtis “Sauce” Wilson-produced, lead radio single from Electric Café, which blends the group’s signature harmonies with a futuristic language for romance, became their first Top 10 single in 20 years. To date, the video, playing up the intergalactic love vibe, has nearly 2 million YouTube views.

Their second single, “Reach 4 Me,” a catchy song instructing a lover how to keep the relationship alive, hit the Top 20. The album itself on En Vogue Records, the label formed by Herron and Ellis in 2016 and distributed by eOne Music, reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s independent album chart.

Wisely, the critically acclaimed album builds on all that makes En Vogue great—killer vocals infused with class. Thirty years later, the ladies remain the epitome of beauty and grace, proving that women can not only top and control the game on their own terms long-term, but look incredible and fashionable while doing so. As for keeping their pristine vocals and their bodies fit to maintain their signature high-energy, crowd-pleasing performance standard, the divas credit a largely plant-based diet and vigorous workout routines.

Keeping their sound fresh hasn’t been hard for the trio. “We were just looking for a vibe,” says Herron of their first studio album since 2004. “In the beginning, we were feeling that electronic dance sound, but then the music started to evolve creatively.” Barrett chimes in that “we love the authenticity of hip-hop and the fusion of old school rhythm with a contemporary sound.”

The result has been stunning. In addition to “Rocket,” other standouts include “I’m Good,” written and produced by Raphael Saadiq, as well as “Déjà vu” and “Blue Skies” from the group’s original production duo, Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy and “Have a Seat” featuring Snoop Dogg. Not only sonically pleasing, the album overflows with key messaging about women’s empowerment, self-love and healthy relationships.

Constantly touring, Ellis says “There has never been a time when we didn’t have a show on the books.” At the top of 2018, the trio treated their European fans with shows in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Holland and Germany. In the United States, they stay on the road and in our ears, as their music is heard in such films as Captain Marvel and What Men Want as well as such TV shows as Pose and 9-1-1. En Vogue also hopes to add more acting to their credits, which includes their own 2014 Lifetime film, An En Vogue Christmas.

During their time off, the ladies enjoy spending time with loved ones, which for Herron includes a husband and four kids. They also give back with The HollyRod Foundation, which provides medical, physical, and emotional support to families living with autism and individuals battling Parkinson’s disease, as well as non-profit organizations that rescue victims from human trafficking and provide them with educational and job training, topping their philanthropic efforts.

Change may be inevitable, but some things remain magically the same. Three decades later, En Vogue continues to set a high standard for women in music. Their crowns remain intact. In a fickle industry, they have not only been able to “hold on,” but they’ve ascended to their “legendary” status on their own terms.

B. Howard was born in Los Angeles and was raised between Los Angeles and Chicago.
Howard’s career as a singer, songwriter, producer began with his first major placement on Ginuwine’s 2003 single “Love You More” which reached #23 on The Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Alicia Michelle “Miki” Howard was the daughter of two well-known gospel singers. Her father, Clay Graham, sang with the Pilgrim Jubiliees and her mother, Josephine Howard, was a member of the Caravans, a group that would eventually be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

When Howard was in her early teens, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles. Already aiming at a career in music, the 15-year-old Howard received her first break when she participated in a teen beauty contest. Augie Johnson, leader of the group Side Effect, happened to be in the audience; impressed with Howard’s singing talent, Howard also joined the lineup of Side Effect in 1978 when another singer departed. She sang with Side Effect until 1982.

Howard signed a contract with Atlantic Records in the mid-1980s and recorded her first solo album, “Come Share My Love”, in 1986. The title track from the album was its first single, hitting the top ten of the R&B charts and reaching number five in late 1986. A remake of the pop standard “Imagination,” which Howard had fought to include on “Come Share My Love”, was another hit from the album.

Howard’s second solo album, 1988’s “Love Confessions”, offered another top-five R&B hit with “Baby Be Mine.” “That’s What Love Is,” a duet with Gerald Levert, also hit the R&B charts. In the meantime, Howard’s third solo album,” Miki Howard”, was released in 1989 and proved her most commercially successful to date. The single “Ain’t Nuthin’ in the World” became Howard’s first number-one hit on the R&B charts and another song, “Love Under New Management,” followed it to number two and became one of Howard’s signature tunes.

Howard continued with a successful solo career after switching to Giant Records in 1991. Her first single under her new contract, “Ain’t Nobody like You,” became Howard’s second number-one R&B hit. The subsequent album, 1992’s “Femme Fatale”, featured Howard’s renditions of classic tracks originally performed by Dinah Washington (“This Bitter Earth”) and Billie Holiday (“Good Morning Heartache”).

After a casting director saw her perform some Billie Holiday tunes at a New York City concert at Radio City Music Hall, Howard was offered the chance to portray Holiday in a nightclub scene in director Spike Lee’s 1992 film “Malcolm X”. The following year, Howard recorded an entire album of Holiday songs, “Miki Sings Billie”, including her favorite Holiday tune, “Don’t Explain.” In 1993, Howard made another movie appearance in director John Singleton’s “Poetic Justice”.

She released “Live Plus” in 1996 and a comeback album of original material, “Can’t Count Me Out”, in 1997. After a four year hiatus, “Three Wishes”, was released in 2001 to excellent reviews. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Recording.

She followed that with “Pillow Talk” (2006), “Private Collection” (2008), “I Choose To Be Happy” (2015) and a live recording “Miki Howard- Live In Concert” in 2015.

Howard was featured on the second season on TV One’s critically acclaimed bio-series “Unsung”. Miki’s episode was the highest rated of her season and in 2015 was adapted into a TV movie for TV One to be released in June of 2016 with “Chi-Raq” actress Teyonah Parris in the lead role.

Stephanie Mills first came to fame as “the little girl with the big voice” as the star of the hit Broadway play, #The Wiz, an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book, -The Wizard Of Oz. She had many R&B hits such as “I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love,” “I Feel Good All Over,” “(You’re Puttin’) A Rush On Me,” “Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel)” and “Home” along with one certified million selling single, “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” In addition, she also had five gold albums: Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’, Sweet Sensation, Stephanie, If I Were Your Woman and Home. Born on March 22, 1957 in Brooklyn, NY, Mills honed her rich vocals singing gospel music at Brooklyn’s Cornerstone Baptist Church as a small child. At age 9, she began appearing in the Broadway play +Maggie Flynn. She was presented with first prize after winning “The Amateur Hour” talent contest six weeks straight at New York’s famed Apollo Theater when she was nine. That success led to her being chosen as the opening act for The Isley Brothers, eventually becoming good friends with lead singer Ronald Isley. Many years later, Isley would manage and later marry singer/songwriter Angela Winbush, who co-wrote one of her number one R&B hits.

Mills’ debut album, Movin’ In The Right Direction was recorded for ABC Records in 1974. A year later, she won the role of Dorothy in +The Wiz. Her rendition of the beautiful ballad “Home” was a showstopper, mesmerizing audiences nightly for a number of years. The original cast recording of The Wiz was produced by Jerry Wexler and issued by Atlantic Records in spring 1975. Curiously, when +The Wiz was made into a full length feature film by Motown Records’ film division and Universal Pictures, Diana Ross played the role of Dorothy instead of Mills. The film ended up being a major flop. Singer Jermaine Jackson referred Mills to Motown head Berry Gordy, who signed her to the label. Her Motown debut was For the First Time, written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, being issued in October 1976.

For the First Time is a sweet affair with Mills convincingly covering Bacharach/ David standards, most of which were originally recorded by Dionne Warwick. In 1978, she signed to 20th Century Records and was teamed with the hit production duo of James Mtume — later leader of Mtume, who had a gold single with “Juicy Fruit” — and Reggie Lucas. Her first LP for the label, Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’, went gold, going to number 12 R&B and number 22 pop on Billboard’s charts in summer 1979 and spawned the singles, “Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'” and “You Can Get Over.” Her next LP, Sweet Sensation (#3 R&B, #16 Pop, spring 1980) yielded “Sweet Sensation,” “Never Knew Love Like This Before,” and the radio-aired LP track, “Try My Love.” Around this time, she briefly married former Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniels of the group Shalamar. Next came the LP titled Stephanie in spring 1981, which also was a huge hit, peaking at #3 R&B and #30 Pop. The album included notable songs such as “Two Hearts” — a midtempo duet with Teddy Pendergrass — “Night Games” and the radio-aired LP cut, “Don’t Stop Doin’ What Cha Do.” In 1981, Mills switched to Neil Bogart’s Casablanca Records. Her LPs for the label included Tantalizingly Hot, Merciless and I’ve Got The Cure. During 1983, she had her own NBC-TV daytime talk show and reprised on role in a Broadway revival of #The Wiz. She also signed with MCA Records, where she released her Stephanie Mills album. The first single from the Stephanie Mills album was “Stand Back,” in late 1985, which also included the passionate ballad “I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love.” “I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love” was initially written by Rene Moore and Angela Winbush — best known as the hit singing duo Rene & Angela — as a gospel song and originally was recorded by Alton McClain and Destiny on their self-titled 1978 Polydor LP. The original version is available on Polygram’s Power of Love: Best of Soul Essentials Ballads. Because of its massive radio play as an album track, Mills’ version of “I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love, — produced by Philly Soul keyboardist Ron Kersey — was reissued as an A side holding the #1 R&B spot for two weeks in spring 1986. Its follow-up, “Rising Desire” reached #11 R&B in summer 1986. Her next LP’s title cut was the Clay McMurray/ Gloria Jones/ Pam Sawyer song, “If I Were Your Woman,” originally a 1971 #1 R&B, #9 Pop smash for Gladys Knight and the Pips. Philly-based producer Nick Martinelli gave Mills her second #1 R&B hit with “I Feel Good All Over,” written by husband and wife songwriting duo, Gabriel Hardeman and Annette Hardeman. The song held the #1 R&B spot for three weeks in spring 1987. Originally submitted to Mills’ fellow MCA labelmate Patti Labelle by the Hardemans, the track was included on Mills’ LP If I Were Your Woman, issued June 1987 and peaked at #30 Pop in summer 1987.

Paul Laurence produced and co-wrote with Timmy Allen the chugging ‘”(You’re Putting) a Rush On Me” giving the singer her third #1 R&B hit in fall 1987. The single made it to #85 Pop and was followed by “Secret Lady,” which landed at #7 R&B in late 1987. Her covers of “If I Were Your Woman” and “Where Is The Love” followed. All were included on her If I Were Your Woman album, which peaked at #1 R&B, #30 Pop in summer 1987. Following these hits, Mills contacted Ronald Isley about working with singer/songwriter/producer Angela Winbush who had hits as half of Rene and Angela and was forging a hit-filled career as a recording artist and producer for the group Body among others. The collaboration between Mills and Winbush resulted in another #1 R&B single, “Something In The Way You Make Me Feel,” in summer 1989. Having starred for five years in the smash Broadway show #The Wiz and recorded the song “Home for the play’s 1975 original cast soundtrack album, she wanted to record the song again as a posthumous tribute to the play’s producer, Ken Harper, and the song’s composer, Charlie Smalls. On her new version of “Home,” Take 6 sung the background vocals. The song went to #1 R&B in late 1989 and was followed by “Comfort Of A Man” and “Real Love.” The Home LP ended up peaking at #5 R&B, #82 Pop in summer 1989. She then recorded a charting single with J.T. Taylor titled “Heart To Heart” in late 1991. Her final MCA album, Something Real included the hit “All Day All Night” and “Never Do Wrong.” Following this album, she recorded a gospel album, Personal Inspirations, for Interscope Records and recorded several tracks at Philadelphia International Records with Bunny Sigler among others in the late ’90s. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide

The City of North Miami’s 2019 Black History Month celebration is set to honor community leaders, celebrate organized black movements in art, and explore the power of libraries to transform communities.

The annual Black History Month Gospel Concert, with the Miami Oratorio Society, on Saturday, Feb. 16, is a celebration of music, culture and black history at North Miami Public Library. The concert highlights the music that began in the 17th century with simple melodies of African slaves, uttered in unison. Under the direction of Andrew Anderson, this concert will highlight the richness of Black culture, and features Gospel soloist, Tiffany Hall, along with the renowned Tim Watson Jazz Band. The event starts at 2 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

The 4th Annual Evening of Honors Dinner celebration is set for Friday, Feb. 22. This once a year event is cultivated to honor South Florida’s brightest and dedicated community leaders at the Joe Celestin Center, located at 1525 NW 135thStreet, North Miami. All of the City’s 2019 Black History Month events are organized by a team of dedicated staff volunteers.

On the last day of Black History Month, elected officials of North Miami held the fourth annual NoMi Fest at Cagni Park. It was a chilly night full of live performances, DJ-spinning classics and a variety of food.

Vice Mayor Alix Desulme said he realized just how effective the event was at bringing the community together, and decided to add a giving-back component that supports low-income residents.

“Everything that we make from this event goes back into our foundation to help our residents,” Desulme said.

Desulme has seen a steady attendance increase in NoMi Fest since it began in 2016. He’s optimistic that it will continue to grow until eventually outgrowing the current venue.

NoMi Fest is scheduled to happen again in late February 2021.

The NoMi Music Fest returns for a fifth year celebrating old school tunes and good vibes only with DJs, food and friends under the stars at Cagni Park.
